Starting in 2024, Summary of Mt.Fuji climbing regulations and entrance fees

五合目の入り口付近
The 5th Station of Mt.Fuji

FujiYoshida-guchi trail will be subject to new climbing restrictions starting in 2024. Therefore, even if you make it to Fuji 5th Station, you may not be able to proceed further.

We think this is a wise decision in light of the increasing number of climbers who are causing trouble to those around them by not following the rules, including without taking proper rest climbers. We sincerely hope that this regulation will make Mt. Fuji as clean and trouble-free as possible.

The framework has been announced by Yamanashi Prefecture, but there are still many unclear aspects as the regulations are just beginning. The following is a summary of the contents as of May 13, 2024.

Decided matters

  1. A gate will be installed at the entrance to the trail at the 5th station of the Yoshida Route.
  2. Gates will be closed during the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. the next day (entry to the mountain is possible from 3:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).
  3. Gates will be closed when the number of visitors exceeds 4,000 per day.
  4. 2,000 yen per person for trail use (Facility Usage) + *1,000 yen per person for Donation (Optional).
  5. If you have already reserved a mountain lodge, you can pass through even when the gate is closed.
  6. Up to 3,000 people can make reservations in advance and 1,000 people as on-site quota on the day of the climb.
  7. Reservations are available until 11:59 PM on the day before the Mt.Fuji climb. Pre-payment of the 2000 yen toll fee is required by credit card or QR code. (No changes or cancellations are allowed)
  8. A single payment for up to 100 people (200,000 yen) can be made in a single transaction by a single representative.

Tentatively decided

  1. Advance reservation system for gate traffic
Reservations will be accepted from May 20, 2024.
  2. How to prove that your reservation to the mountain lodge has been duly made

Concern

  • The maximum daily capacity for climbers is set at 4,000, which is a large number.
If the purpose of the regulation is to “limit the time" or “charge a fee to enter the Mt.Fuji," this is not particularly problematic, but it may not alleviate congestion. Legally restricting access to the mountain is difficult, so a daily limit of 4,000 climbers has been set.
  • If a person who made a reservation in advance does not enter the Mt.Fuji on the day of the reservation
Since pre-payment is required, there should be no instances of fraud.
  • Proof of mountain lodge reservation has not yet been determined.
A simple unified system is needed, with some mountain lodges only accepting reservations by phone.
  • We are concerned about the extent to which we can raise awareness overseas.
We’d like to see the rules put together quickly, including decisions on the details.

Related information and data

Last year in 2023, the number of climbers from Yoshida-guchi was 137,236 from July 1 to September 10 (daily average 1,906), and the highest daily number was 3,974 on July 16, 2023, so they do not expect to exceed the daily limit of 4,000 so much.

However, the maximum daily number of visitors in 2019 was 5,033 (with a total of 149,969 visitors, or an average of 2,079 per day). Therefore, if the number of foreign visitors continues to increase, it is likely that the daily limit will be exceeded.

Incidentally, here is the reasons why Yamanashi Prefecture sets the standard at 4,000

Mt.Fuji was registered as a World Heritage site, Icomos requested that a “Visitor Management Plan" be developed to ensure the safety and comfort of climbers.

In this plan, if the number of climbers per day exceeded 4,000, the trail near the summit would become crowded late at night, and there was a risk of climbers bumping into each other’s poles or sacks, causing them to fall over. We use the number of 4,000 climbers as one criterion for determining the number of climbers at risk.

Yamanashi prefecture

If you are climbing Mt.Fuji from the foot of the mountain, you will not need to pass through this gate and you will not be charged a toll.

For climbers coming from the foot of the mountain, this toll does not apply.
