The construction of the Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge began in October 1968 to alleviate lakeside traffic congestion and was completed in March 1971. The bridge operated as a toll bridge until June 2005. A tollgate was installed at the south entrance, and the lane width where the toll booths were located remains unchanged today.

“Japan’s 100 Best Roads”

The Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge was the first bridge built within the special zone of the national park. In 1987, the bridge was selected as one of “Japan’s 100 Best Roads" for its beautiful scenery and outstanding natural sights, and a monument commemorating this selection was erected. The monument currently stands at the south side of the bridge.
