Saiko Bat Cave

Saiko Bat Cave

Nationally designated natural monument

The Saiko Bat Cave is located in the Aokigahara Jukai Forest at the southwest of Lake Saiko. The total extension is over 350 meters and is the largest in the lava cave at the foot of Mt.Fuji.

It was created by the eruption of Mt.Fuji, which occurred from 864 to 866.

Because the environment in the cave was suitable for the habitat, there were many bats in the past. However, the state that the sightseeing maintenance was not made continued, and the temporary bat has decreased sharply. Through the conservation activities that began in the 1990s, they gradually increased their numbers.

It is an impression to enter the cave with a lot of bats only in the name of “Bat Cave", please be relieved because it is unlikely to encounter the bat oppositely.

Inside the Bat Cave
Blocked for bats protection

The inside of the cave is very cool in summer and when the outside temperature is too high, the air around the entrance may become white slightly due to the temperature difference. Entering the cave from the entrance to the inside is a large space, but the ceiling is low enough to go to the back.

A helmet is lent at the entrance of the management office, and it is necessary to put it in the inside of the cave wearing it. In addition, if you wear sandals, you can borrow rain boots.
