Unoshima island

Unoshima island

Important cultural property of Fujikawaguchiko-machi

An uninhabited island in the Lake Kawaguchiko, and is the only island in the Fuji Five Lakes. Sarasvati (Unoshima shrine) is enshrined in the island, and a annual festival is held every year on April 25, and “Chigono-mai (the dance of the children taking part in a festive)" is dedicated. You can usually go by boat, but ships come and go from the Oishi area on the annual festival day.

Unoshima shrine on the island

Earthenwares and stone implements from the Jomon period to the Yayoi period are excavated from the Unoshima island. So it is an extremely important remains, and is appointed in the cultural assets of the Fujikawaguchiko-machi.

There is a record that Yorimoto Chiku of the lord of a Kamine castle caught by Shinano invasion of Shingen Takeda is confined into the Unoshima island In 1554, and he killed himself at the Funatsuhama beach the next year.

From the lake shore to the island at a distance of 200M, the only way to go is by boat. There is more than 500m from the nearest rowing boat platform. There are shallow places around the island, so be careful when you go. And we recommend wearing waterproof boots, because there is no pier.

Possession of the Unoshima island

Because the island is located in the middle of the lake, there were conflicts from the old days between Katsuyama-Village of the southern coast of Lake Kawaguchiko and Oishi-Village of the northern coast. Then at last, both sides appealed to a magistrate in the Edo period.

It was judged that the lava from the south did not reach the island, and it was found that it was a continuation from Mt.Misaka on the north side. So it is said that Unoshima island became part of Oishi-Village.
